Emeritus Professor Tim Maloney

Tim Maloney is Emeritus Professor of Economics at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). After completing his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1983, he held academic positions in the United States at the University of Missouri and Bowdoin College. He relocated to New Zealand in 1991 and spent the next two decades at the University of Auckland, where he served as an Associate Professor, Deputy Head of Economics, and Associate Dean Postgraduate.

In 2010, Tim was appointed by Auckland University of Technology to establish its School of Economics. Prior to retiring in 2025, he served as Head of four different schools and as Associate Dean Academics at AUT. He also served as a Senior Policy Advisor at the New Zealand Treasury from 1993 to 1999 and as Chief Economist at the Ministry of Social Development from 2017 to 2022.

Tim’s fields of interest include labour economics, applied econometrics, and public policy. He has undertaken commissioned research for the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC, and has served as a government advisor to various New Zealand ministries over the past 35 years.

His research has been published in academic journals including American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Australian Economic Papers, Economica, Higher Education, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Labor Economics, Labour Economics, New Zealand Economic Papers, Southern Economic Journal, and Review of Income and Wealth.
